PINELLAS COUNTY, FL — Each October, people all over the world join together for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, raising funds and awareness, as well as showing support for all those affected by breast cancer worldwide. This year, Pinellas County tax collector offices are partnering with the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation to raise funds and spread awareness for this great cause.
Tax collector employees will promote the “End Breast Cancer” specialty plate throughout October and wear pink FL Breast Cancer Foundation t-shirts on Wednesdays to help raise awareness. Customers who switch to the specialty plate or donate $5 or more to this worthy cause will receive a reusable tote bag as a token of appreciation. All funds raised from the “End Breast Cancer” license plate stay in Florida to support breast cancer education and medical research. The plate has raised nearly $10 million since it launched in 2002.
“For over twenty years now, the FL Breast Cancer Foundation has been making great strides in breast cancer education and research here in our state,” said Pinellas County Tax Collector, Charles W. Thomas. “We are excited to team up with them again this year to do anything we can to support this life-saving cause and get closer to curing breast cancer permanently.”
According to the CDC, each year in the United States, about 270,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 42,000 women die from the disease. Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women.
